What We Collect
Neighborhood Insights is designed to be usable without an account. We do not offer saved user profiles or long-term personal dashboards for map activity.
- No Account Registration: The Service does not require a username, password, or account sign-up to browse pages or use the explore tools.
- Map Activity: Drawn areas, selected Census geographies, and filters are processed so the Service can return results, but they are not offered to you as saved accounts or long-term user sessions.
- Short-Lived Browser State: On explore pages, first-party cookies may store recent map state such as map center and zoom, selected metrics and filters, chosen boundaries, and recently drawn shapes so the page can restore your last selections after a refresh or short return visit.
- No Data Sales: We do not sell your personal information.
- No Personal Profiles: The Service is not designed to build advertising profiles or account-based histories about individual users.
Information We May Process
Running the site still involves a small amount of technical data and request data:
- Server Logs: Web server logs may record technical details such as IP address, browser information, requested pages, and timestamps for operations, security, and troubleshooting.
- Functional Cookies: Explore-page state is stored in short-lived first-party cookies that currently expire after about five minutes. These cookies can include map position, selected metrics or filters, chosen Census boundaries, and recently drawn custom areas.
- Approximate Location Requests: When the site centers the map near you, the Service may send IP-based request information to an IP geolocation provider so it can estimate a general starting location.
- Geocoding Queries: If you search for an address or place, that query is sent to the geocoding provider used by the Service so matching results can be returned.
- Analytics Data: When analytics is enabled in production, Google Analytics may collect page-view and general site-usage information as described below.
Third-Party Services
The Service relies on third-party services for some features. Those providers may process information under their own terms and privacy policies.
Current examples include cloud hosting and infrastructure providers, mapping libraries and tile providers, ipapi.co for approximate IP-based location, OpenStreetMap Nominatim for address search, and Google Analytics when enabled in production.
When enabled in production, Google Analytics may set or read its own cookies or similar identifiers to help us understand aggregate page usage and improve the site. Those analytics technologies are separate from the short-lived first-party cookies used to restore explore-page state, and analytics is intentionally not loaded for local or private-network hosts.
Please review the privacy materials published by those providers if you want more detail about how they handle information sent to them.
How Information Is Shared
Information is shared only as needed to operate the Service, respond to the requests you make, maintain infrastructure, or comply with legal obligations. For example, address searches are sent to the geocoding provider, and analytics events are sent to Google Analytics only when that feature is enabled.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time to reflect changes in practices or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. Users are encouraged to check back periodically for updates.
